Christoph Byland graduated from the University of Berne with a degree in law and was admitted to the bar in 1985 after various internships at court and in the legal profession.

After working as a lawyer for a leading telecommunications company and subsequently for an energy and industrial group, Christoph Byland headed the legal department of an international engineering group from 1991. From 1997 to 2003 he was General Counsel of an IT service provider in the banking sector. Since July 2003, Christoph Byland has been practicing as a lawyer in his own law firm in Technopark Zurich (Switzerland).
